During the second world war there was a famous sea cat called Unsinkable Sam. His first ship was the German ship Bismark. This was sunk in 1941. The cat survived and was picked up by the British and became ships cat to HMS Cossack, this too was sunk a few months later. The cat survived and boarded the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. This was torpedoed and the cat found himself, again among the survivors. The Royal Navy decided he should be put on land duty. He was sent to Gibraltar to keep the Governor’s residence mouse–free. He later retired to the UK in a home for sailors. A portrait of him is kept by the National Maritime Museum of Greenwich.
