From its introduction to Great Britain in the 17th century, the pineapple represented a symbol of wealth and opulence. King Charles II commissioned a portrait of himself being presented with one by a figure believed to be his Royal Gardener and, such was the pineapple's status that, in the Georgian era people were known to rent them at great expense for parties.
