The fossil record of insects goes back an astounding 400 million years to the Devonian period, This period  saw the growth of terrestrial forests. With these plants came insects. Fossil evidence of insects before the Devonian period is unlikely to exist, but there is fossil plant evidence that shows plants being munched on by mites or insects of some kind.
